February 9, 2002 meeting

SHELTER

KRLD has aired a number of segments on the issue – and several channels have done the same. Tawana spoke with the architect. He mentioned that Austin is building a 60,000 square foot shelter. There has been discussion about building a medium-size shelter and updating Forney Road at the same time. Let’s discuss the pros and cons.

LEGAL

Now that our brief is filed in the Appellate court, it is a waiting game. Don says that it may take as long as a year to get heard. Don did note, however, that he thinks we have a good chance of winning on this – and that this could have far-reaching benefits. (For example, we could have heard about the deer fire-ant experiments before any animals had suffered and died.)

SWMC

We sent our letter to the students. Got a few replies. We also issued a challenge. Why don’t we plan an outing to the university after our March meeting? Also, after the ACT general meeting, we’ll have a brief meeting for anyone interested in helping plan and execute our next steps in the Dr. Johnson campaign.

HUNTING

Demonstration at Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation February 16. See calendar. At the end of the meeting today, we will show a short hunting video. It is a little graphic – but, if you can bear it, it will help enforce why we need to target hunting. If you find videos too disturbing, we totally understand if you need to step out of the room before the video plays.

FUNDRAISING DRIVE

We need to organize our raffle – and to arrange for our T-shirts. Should we set up a committee? What are our next steps?

HLS

Activists arrested in New York - and a surprising demonstration here. Stephens has divested!

PETLAND

Karen has a demo planned at the Southlake store. February 16, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 a.m.

MARCH OF DIMES

Hold Saturday, April 27th, open. In the wee hours of the morning (6:30-8:30 a.m.), we will make our annual pilgrimage to White Rock Lake. If you haven’t joined us before, this is a fun excursion. We will pass out Physician
Committee for Responsible Medicine information in an effort to get walkers to stipulate that the funds they raise are not to be used for animal research.

NEW ISSUES

Red Jacket. Cynthia is organizing volunteers for this regular tabling opportunity. If you are interested, see her after the meeting – or call her.

EARTHFEST

Earthfest. Greg has been working on this., do we need to line up volunteers? Do we need to discuss any particulars?

GREAT AMERICAN MEAT OUT

What do we want to do?

GREEN MAN

The restaurant’s backers have decided to introduce dairy. So, although there may still be a vegetarian restaurant at the site (Sears Street off Greenville, near Betwixt and Between), the vegan GreenMan will be moving to a yet-to-be-determined new location.

SAFEWAY

ACT will be joining PETA in a boycott of Safeway (and it’s local subsidiaries, Tom Thumb, Randall’s and Simon David. Bruce Freidrich will be in Dallas for the event on Monday, February 25, at 10:00 a.m. Bruce is
coming to town early, and has offered to do some talks or debates the weekend before the demo. Can we line anything up for him?

.

People often say that humans have always eaten animals, as if this is a justification for continuing the practice. According to this logic, we should not try to prevent people from murdering other people, since this has also been done since the earliest of times.

Isaac Bashevis Singer

The human body, the very one you're sitting in right now, has no nutritional requirement for animal flesh or cow's milk. It functions superbly without them, and this includes producing healthy offspring. Mothers who do not give milk or dairy products to their children are helping their children stay healthy rather than depriving them.
